Felling a Tree with a Small Knife
From WildernessWiki.org
Introduction
In a survival situation, or while packing light, we often do not have access to the saws, hatchets, or large knives we would otherwise carry. A little secret is that they are not completely necessary! It is actually quite easy to cut down a tree with just a small blade such as the famous Mora knives. This technique can be used on small trees and limbs. Aside from being useful in the construction of a survival shelter, this method is useful for cutting wood in locations which may be difficult with a larger tool (such as very close to the ground, high overhead, or at an awkward angle) and thus lends itself to the harvesting of wood for walking sticks or bow staves.

1) Cut a notch into the tree somewhat deeper than the innermost layer of bark.
2) Cut similar notches around the entire circumference of the tree.
3) Go over the ring again, and make it a bit deeper.
4) Break the tree cleanly at the ring by pushing on it from above. Slice away any fibers that remain attached.
