Preparedness

In a survival situation, one must be prepared to think resourcefully, and find techniques to utilize everyday objects in new and useful ways.

I have known for some time that a fire may be started with nothing more than tinder, a small piece of steel wool, and a 9 volt battery. This is an excellent technique, but how often does one find themselves needing a fire and having a 9 volt battery on their person? I believe in being able to survive with a set of core tools that you always keep with you. I know I don't keep a 9 volt on me, but I always have my cell phone.

Items needed

For this example I used a small piece of 00 steel wool, my cell phone (an LG VX8700), and some small maple shavings.

This phone features a 3.7 volt lithium ion battery, with all terminals on one end. The battery is easily removed, even with cold, wet hands.

Ignition

Once the tinder is placed on/in the scrap of steel wool, simply touch the terminals to the wool. Image:Cell4.jpg

As soon as you see the wires of the steel wool glowing, withdraw the battery. As shown, the fire is quickly lit. Image:Cell6.jpg

Battery charge

Obviously, when in a survival situation, one may try to use their cell phone to contact help. If you should be forced to do this, don't worry about draining your battery. I have found that the cell battery will still light fires even with such a low charge that the phone would not power up!

Additional tips

I have discovered that such a small amount of steel wool is required, I can fit a small packet of steel wool wrapped in waxed paper underneath the battery cover of my phone. The waxed paper insulates the wool as to not accidentally ignite, and also acts as tinder.
