Fusing

Fusing is a technique used to bond the fibers in a synthetic rope, so as to prevent fraying. It involves fire, so be careful!

Technique

Fusing uses the heat of a flame to melt the fibers on a synthetic cord to a molten state. Once this is achieved, the flame should be removed. This allows the melted fibers to cool, and form a solid tip on the cord. This will hold for a long time, but may crack with wear. If this occurs, simply trim the end and re-fuse.

When a synthetic rope is this frayed, it needs to be trimmed before fusing

Trim the frayed portion of the rope off

Apply an open flame to the end, and hold it until the fibers have melted together

For larger cords such as heavy rope, it is helpful to first wrap a length of tape around the rope where it will be cut. This keeps the rope neater, and leaves a flush, regular end.

Safety

Be wary of dripping, molten plastic - it will adhere to and burn anything it lands on. Do this in a well-ventilated area, as toxic fumes can be created. Do not touch the end of a freshly fused rope to anything. Make sure the tip is completely cooled before using.
