A simple half hitch is essentially an overhand knot tied around a pole or post. By itself, it is a weak knot that slips very easily, but is a useful component in many other knots.

  1. Pass the working end of the rope around the post and over the standing part.
  2. Bring the end underneath and through the loop that is formed.

A rope can be safely tied to a post by using two half hitches. Simply tie a second half hitch around the standing part and pull both half hitches tight to the post. A round turn and two half hitches adds an extra turn around the post before the half hitches, making the knot more secure.
