Hiking boots is a collective term used to describe all manner of hiking shoes, from low wilderness running shoes to high-top ankle-supporting leather boots. They are generally of good quality material, meant to stand up to the rigors of outdoor use. Many new models use Gore-Tex®, while many older types are leather. The advantages and disadvantages of these materials are often debated, and the choice lies with the wearer.

Most hiking boots have excellent treads on the bottom, to give ample traction when steep and slippery conditions are encountered. They also tend to have high tops, to give good ankle support. Spraining an ankle is very painful, and can be lethal if it leaves one stranded in the wilderness.
