The reef knot, also known as the square knot, is a fast and intuitive binding knot, used primarily to tie off reefed sails on sailing vessels. It is a handy knot, because when tied properly it lies flat, and so is somewhat comfortable if used to tie bandages or slings. It is not a safe knot to use for bearing live weight because if pressure is exerted improperly, it may turn into two half hitches and come undone. It is not categorized as a bend for this reason.

The square knot is a symbol of the Scouting movement, symbolizing the joining of members in a tight bond of brotherhood.
