Seasoning Cast Iron
From WildernessWiki.org
Cast Iron Cookware
In order for a piece of cast iron cookware to function at its best, it should be seasoned well. The process for this is relatively simple, and is well worth the time and effort. A well-seasoned piece of cast iron cookware will last a lifetime, and often longer.
Steps to preserve the seasoning
- Do not cook foods that are high in acids, such as tomatoes.
- Do not wash with dish detergent or other strong soaps.
- Store dutch ovens with the lid slightly cracked to allow airflow, and place a napkin or paper-towel inside.
How to Season
- Make sure the item is clean, but do not wash it with soap.
- Warm the item slightly, until it is as hot as you can handle. Be careful not to burn yourself.
- Using paper towels or a clean cotton rag, apply a liberal glaze of vegetable oil to the entire item, inside and out.
- If possible, bake the item for approximately an hour. Keep the temperature around 375°.
