Fire
During the day a fire should be built close to an open area if possible. Once the fire is buring well add fresh foliage to create thick smoke, this will stand out against green foliage and blue skys well.
At night a fire should be in an open area where it may be seen over large distances, possibly on raised ground. It should be built with lots of dry wood to burn as brightly as possible as smoke will not be seen very well at night.
Light
You can use sunlight to draw attention by using a reflective surface, eg a knife blade.
Hold the reflective object so light is seen reflecting off it away from you. Hold up two fingers in a V shape and aim between the reflective object and the attention target. Move the light reflection to cross against your fingers. This way you know the light is heading in the direction of the target. Move the light up and down to draw attention, or to signal Morse Code.
Sound
The best source of sound is a whistle as it provides a non-natural sound that travels large distances.
Other
You can use items such as sleeping bags laying on the ground to be seen from the air.
