Twist Bread
From WildernessWiki.org
Introduction
Twist Bread is a type of bread which can be cooked and enjoyed in the wilderness. Fresh, hot bread highly compliments any wilderness meal, and can be used to boost a group's morale. Additionally, the ingredients are lightweight since they are dehydrated and don't require any special packaging.
Preparation
All that must be carried to make twist bread is biscuit mix and a container which can hold water. You can either purchase pre-made powder biscuit mix by the box in grocery stores or make your own following a recipe like this one. In the field, simply follow the box's biscuit mix instructions, which only involves adding water. Generally, just less than one part water for every three parts mix (or follow a recipe in accordance with the one used for making your own biscuit mix). The mixture should be thicker than that which you would cook with at home. For flavor, experiment with adding salt, sugar, cinnamon, honey, berries, nuts, or any sort of edible fruit or seed which can be found in the woods.
Cooking
To cook, wrap the mixture around a hardwood stick. Softwoods like pine should be avoided because of their tendency to leach unpleasant resins into the food. Place stick over a fire: a bed of coals will provide more consistent, easier-to-use heat than open flames.
When the twist bread is finished cooking, it will be a golden-brown. Simply remove and allow to cool.
It tastes great plain, especially after a lot of activity, but is even better with butter, peanut butter, or jelly .
