New author
Hello everybody! Great project! Posted the link on a couple of relevant forums. Perhaps we'll see new authors soon.
Some comments
- I guess the new posts in this article should be placed on top of others? Perhaps some note about that would be appropriate in the welcome preamble.
- IMHO, the MediaWiki is too complicated for an average user (I see the complaints in the previous post). Is there any plans to migrate to something with WISIWIG editor or perhaps to add a WISIWIG editor plug in? That will attract more authors - for sure.
- Tried to view the [new images gallery] in the special pages got an error:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 9792 bytes) in /www/110mb.com/f/u/n/d/i/t/o/r/funditor/htdocs/wiki/includes/media/Bitmap.php on line 168
Try setting the ini_set('memory_limit','20M') to a higher number, like ini_set('memory_limit','30M')
- Maybe it's time to upgrade the engine to [newer version]?

Content Encoding Error
If I visit The Wilderness Wiki - Main Page, it shows up fine, but if I click on history or "view source" or Completed articles and many others, I'll get a Content Encoding Error The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression. The problem is the radarurl.com online stats footer that gets inserted around gzip'd content, which is invalid.
One temporary fix is to reconfigure firefox not to accept gzip content, go to url about:config edit network.http.accept-encoding and remove gzip, deflate
Asdfonetime 06:43, 18 August 2009 (EDT)
Alright, then
It was mostly a homework diversion for me, as well, but I think it has some potential to become a fairly encyclopedic resource, so I'll be adding to it on and off throughout the summer. As long as it's not forgotten and you're not going to let it disappear into the electronic ether, I don't mind putting in the time and effort.
What sort of a boat are you building? And where do you expect to use it?

dead video link
nice site. Keep up the good work.
you have a dead video link on this page: http://funditor.110mb.com/wiki/index.php/Slinging

So?
I seem to be the only one who's updated the wiki in a few months. Have you given up, or are we going to keep expanding it? I'm not going to put in much work on it if I'm the only one doing so... -Matt (Talk) 17:37, 11 June 2008 (EDT)
Wiki/index.php
Our first spammer! Wow. Didn't take too long, did it?
Matt (Talk) 16:34, 6 May 2008 (EDT)
Great Wiki!
A link has been added to Western Trails on the General Primitive Skills page. Glen
Thanks!
I found one nice wintergreen plant today, and kind of went nutty. Anyways, I'm glad you like. I haven't contacted geocaching.com yet because I'd still like to tweak the article, and get more pics. I probably can get a few this weekend, and submit it next week. Ethan 20:22, 1 May 2008 (EDT)
Browser
The top of my browser still says Klippe - The Wilderness Wiki. I dont know how or if you can fix it, but I figured I'd point it out. I like the background photo. I see Matt has pointed out that it's kind of grainy, and you probaly had a reason why, so I'll check his talk page. Ethan 17:58, 29 April 2008 (EDT)
Bear v. Bō Staff
Who says I couldn't take on a bear with my epic karate skills!? Thanks for the correction, though. I always wondered what the wooden part of a bow was called.
The ads seem to be working just fine, appearing where they should and not where they shouldn't. The new CSS looks nice, as well. I like the new logo and background image, though the photo is a bit grainy...
Matt (Talk) 15:06, 28 April 2008 (EDT)
Sounds good
That sounds like a good starter contest. I hope we get good results. I'm not seeing ads - which is good. I've done some Google bumping. In the grand scheme of things it's insignificant, but I did it anyways. I'm making the geocaching article better than Wikipedia's - which is tough, because their's is pretty comprehensive. The main delay is getting pictures. Another contest thought, for use in the future, is some sort of recipe contest - Reflector Oven, Dutch Oven, etc. I hope to do a lot of cooking with those two over the summer, so I could test quite a few. Anyways, they'd make a great start to a full recipes page. Ethan 20:15, 27 April 2008 (EDT)
Info on Maps article
It's been a while since I wrote it, but I'm having a hard time getting someone to give me copyright clearance to scan the maps. It's the same old "not my department" thing so common to government. I think I've got it licked now though, I should know within a couple days. I just need to confirm that the site is nonprofit. Deadeye 16:11, 27 April 2008 (EDT)
Righto
OK, I'll do the quick little stumble bit. Let me know what you want me to do as far as the contest goes - otherwise, I'll leave it to you. Ethan 21:22, 25 April 2008 (EDT)
I see (v. 3)
The site is www.geocaching.com and is very informative. I haven't contacted them yet - I haven't quite finished my article yet, and I don't have any pics (yet). So it will be a little while still... I like the shelter idea, for the contest. Are we going to place an ad for it on the Main Page? Like, "Win a DVD of ..." I can start a page for it, and draw up some rules if we need them. Why've you been signing with ~Funditor instead of the for tildes? Ethan 21:09, 25 April 2008 (EDT)
I see!
Very nice! I like it very much. I was just coming here to ask how to "clear my cache" after trying all sorts of irrelevant things... And then I guess it worked. It looks very nice - definitely permanent logo material! My Geocaching newsletter came today, so the next won't be going out until mid-next week. Ethan 20:49, 25 April 2008 (EDT)
I see
I'd compete for Survivorman! That would be a great one to try out (obviously, I won't compete, but I think lots of other people would.) I think the main contribution it would make would be to generate popularity for the site, mainly through word-of-mouth (Hey, guys, I just won a DVD from The Wilderness Wiki! Pretty sweet...) Anyways...
Interesting logo change. You didn't want to make two lines, maybe with Wilderness in smaller font? I'm just thinking... It looks slightly incomplete. Do what you like anyways... Ethan 10:26, 25 April 2008 (EDT)
Nice! Also, why I hate DialUp
So, I keep trying to respond, except when all this finally loads I have a new message. I really despise dialup...
OK, good contest... He's throwing out a DVD, right? It should probably be something related to the DVD, i.e. "Show us your best whitetail" or "Tell us about your best Bighorn Experience" - right? I've been thinking a bit about promotion... I wonder if we threw out some emails to sites like whitetail365.com or thegearjunky.com that have a huge reader base, if we may be able to squeeze onto a blogroll. I also like the Mora prize idea - they're something nobody would mind winning. We can test it out anyways... I'll put up some threads on forums that would appeal to hunters, seeing as that's what the DVD will be. Ethan 22:50, 24 April 2008 (EDT)
I can't wait
In a few weeks, plants will start coming up and I can start on wild edible bits... That should be fun. I think I should get the geocaching article up this weekend, and hopefully make next week's LoBot newsletter.
Something I was thinking we might try would be a contest of some sort - maybe photography? Like, "Show us your favorite walking stick" or whatever. If the ads really start producing, you might be able to pull something like you did with all your reviews - you have a popular website, so if you review an item for a company, their sales will boost if the review is good, so the item was wisely given (provided it was good). A contest prize would also be good advertising. Like, "Show us your favorite walking stick and win a Garmin GPS" or something like that. Let me know what you think.
Ethan 21:18, 24 April 2008 (EDT)
Looks Good!
OK, hopefully I can slap up the geocaching bit tomorrow evening. What's up with the logo? Is it still going to be the flame, with different text? Or something new? I'm not seeing ads on Talk Pages - don't know if I should or not. Ethan 22:28, 23 April 2008 (EDT)
Moving pages, etc.
Instead of copying and pasting the contents of articles, as you seem to have done with the new main page, you can simply click (as long as you're an admin) the "Move" link at the top of the page. It creates a new article with the contents of the old, and automatically changes the old article to redirect to the new one. It's a bit simpler, and keeps things organized.
Also, is there any reason the main page isn't simply called "Main Page?" I'm just curious, as I'm the kind of person who (as you may have noticed) likes to keep things neat and simple.
Matt (Talk) 17:12, 22 April 2008 (EDT)
OK then
Thanks for the answers on the URL bit. I think we should do something different from WSS. I checked google, and the top result for Wilderness Survival Skills was a geocities site (the second was wildwoodsurvival.com, which confirmed the sneaking suspicion that someone already had a title similar to mine... But that's another story.) I guess what I'm getting at is we should try something at least a bit different. Maybe just the Wilderness Skills Wiki - or something else along those lines. I'm posting this on both of you guys Talk Pages, just so you know. Ethan 23:35, 21 April 2008 (EDT)
What's up with URLs?
Basically, no matter where I navigate within Klippe, I still have http://klippe.funditor.org/ in my URL space, and if I refresh a specific article, I get the Main Page. I tested it out, and it remains even if I navigate to a different webpage. I tested some more, and found out this happens with funditor.org as well. Is this my computer/browser or is it something with the website? Because the big issue is I can't link to specific articles.
Ethan 19:49, 21 April 2008 (EDT)
Damn, it put it at the bottom
I'm assuming these'll be text title links, not thumbnail links... Maybe create an index page for each series, and link to that in the randomness, not the individuals. I'm leaving for Chicago tomorrow afternoon, and I'll be gone until Sunday. Just letting you know, so you don't think I've lost interest (read: my OCD has subsided) so easily. Good luck with the video template. It's looking good.
Matt 22:49, 8 April 2008 (EDT)
Ooo... Cool
Well, isn't that nifty. That should be useful, thanks. And don't you worry:I won't block you. I'll take a look at that template when I get a chance, but probably not tonight. I do do homework occasionally. What sort of name are you looking for? Another foreign word for a wilderness feature? Something more descriptive of the wiki's function? Something more... made up?
Matt 21:15, 7 April 2008 (EDT)
Do you know me now?
Thanks. I was going to ask about that. What exactly does that allow me to do?
Matt 20:46, 7 April 2008 (EDT)
How-tos
I've been going around organizing articles of the how-to nature into this category. I've noticed that this type of article is named in different ways, ranging from How to Clean a Squirrel to Make a Cooking Grille to Simple Fire Starting. Do we want to find a standard naming convention for this type of article, or just leave them as they are?
Matt 21:34, 5 April 2008 (EDT)
New name...
Well... Renaming Klippe. I don't have anything jumping into my head right now, but I'll think on it. What are you looking at - something in a foreign language still... nonsense word... Only one syllable, right? I'll think on it.
Ethan 09:43, 24 March 2008 (EDT)
Stumbleupon?
I noticed that you're a member of stumbleupon.com, and I was reading about it (stumbleupon). I like the look of it, but does it cost anything? What I found searching around was that it's entirely free unless you upgrade to Sponsor. Does it work well, and is it useful? Just wondering, Ethan 17:24, 20 March 2008 (EDT)
Wow...
That's cool! Certainly a boost for my ego, anyway. I'm working on finding a decent program for drawing knots, so I can put a long list of them up. I'll probably have to use MS Paint though. What is BF WSS? yeah, as long as you and I are the only main contributers, I guess our growth is going to be slow. We have several great articles from others though (like the crayfish trap) - so we're doing well. I'm going to be posting Brian Engler's (slingbadger) tanning recipe, although I don't have pictures yet.
Ethan 17:48, 13 March 2008 (EDT)
I just did some quick playing around with google and found that, with a search of Wilderness Wiki, we are 6th from the top, on the first page!!
Searching Klippe, I looked 5 pages in and still didn't find us... Plenty of other wiki entries though. Ironically, the top article (as usual) was Wikipedia - on Klippes (the geological formation). Plenty of german things too, even some MySpace accounts. Yuck.
I googled Funditor, and you had most of the first page, either with funditor.110mb.com (1st entry), metacafe stuff, stumbleupon, etc.
Doing well!!
Ethan 23:45, 12 March 2008 (EDT)
Thanks
It worked. Hopefully (but unlikely), I'll be able to post a full tutorial soon. I have some Dutch Ovens I need to season. I like the PSK article! I'm beginning to formulate plans for a (slightly) bigger, better version of my own. Very nice though!
This whole site is coming along beautifully... You had a great idea when you started this! I hope we keep growing at this rate (or faster).
Ethan 23:24, 12 March 2008 (EDT)
Contents?
OK, I just wrote a stub on Seasoning Cast Iron, and it has a Table of Contents. The problem is, it remains at the top of the page, even above the title. How do I change that? Thanks, Ethan 23:06, 12 March 2008 (EDT)
SwampTalk
I posted a link here on swamptalkforum.com. I'm going to post on other forums soon... I like the random aritcles on the bottom of each page! The squirrel one has almost 200, by the way. Pretty good traffic, as far as I'm concerned!
Ethan 21:13, 12 March 2008 (EDT)
Have fun!
Have a grand old time figuring that out - I haven't a clue. I'm going to turn in, but hopefully I'll be on again tomorrow afternoon/evening. Good luck!! Ethan 23:21, 11 March 2008 (EDT)
PaleoPlanet
I know you announced this over on paleoplanet.net, but I was thinking about popping in and seeing if we could use some of the photos posted there, and especially some of the tutorials, because they've got some great stuff! All of this with permission,of course.
I also thought I'd post a link here on other hunting/outdoorsman sites I've found.
Ethan 23:09, 11 March 2008 (EDT)
I stopped
Very nice! The banner is sufficiently imposing... I like it. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy, to know I wrote something that got a "graphic content" warning on the internet... lol I'll be online until sometime around 11 or later.
Ethan 22:47, 11 March 2008 (EDT)
Quote
I found where I thought you said this was Non-Profit - I was looking through the old slinging.org thread. "There shouldn't be any commercial aspect to this site until it is getting some solid traffic." I remembered that as non-profit. my bad. We certainly seem to be getting pretty good traffic now! Ethan 22:30, 11 March 2008 (EDT)
OK then
Yeah, I was thinking about that while I was writing it. It certainly seems less nasty when you're doing it, even with blood on your hands. Ethan 21:26, 11 March 2008 (EDT)
Gore?
Alright, any restrictions on gory pictures? I've got a decent tutorial on skinning/cleaning a squirrel... The pictures are rather yucky though. I'll put a warning at the top of the page anyways. Ethan 18:41, 11 March 2008 (EDT)
Nice!!
I like the PSK article a lot! The little gallery-type photo section looks very good. Ethan 22:28, 10 March 2008 (EDT)
Actually...
I don't think you said non-profit, I just seem to remember you saying it wasn't a money-making scheme. Whatever... I think AdSense would be cool. Ethan 21:51, 10 March 2008 (EDT)
AdSense?
That's cool - how much do you make off or funditor.org? Where are the ads going to go in? Ethan 19:26, 10 March 2008 (EDT)
Current events
OK, I started the article and figured other people will take it and run. I'm working on other stuff now. What's up with the Current Events page? Are you just keeping it as a record of significant developments, or should we actually see if someone wanted to advertise stuff like... [Example: Paleoplanet is talking about a Bowyers Meeting, somewhere in Europe. There are also several survival schools being thrown around] Even if we didn't charge (you've said this is non-profit, right now), advertising might be useful. I know if we ever get a slingfest happening again, that would be cool to post. Anyways, I was just thinking.
Ethan 19:13, 10 March 2008 (EDT)
550?
OK, I'm taking tons of pictures, and my PSK is one. I'll hopefully get them up later tonight. I have a question that I feel like I should already know - it almost seems criminal to be an admin, and not know it. What does the "550" following most paracord mean? Is it actually the amount of weight it can support? I've been told that, but it seems slightly unrealistic. Anyways... Ethan 18:38, 10 March 2008 (EDT)
Thanks!
Yeah, thanks for the compliment on the snowshoe article. It was my cousin's idea - we had a great hike planned, but then I remembered that my laces were completely shot. We considered stuff like paracord or wire - we even thought about wrapping to entire body in duct tape. He eventually figured zip-ties were my best bet, and they're working great. I was thinking about adding my blog into the Friends list, but I don't think I will until I start writing again. Hopefully that will be soon - a few people discovered it on slinging.org. I'll get some pics of my kit up now - it's the standard Altoids tin style, but I like it. Ethan 18:31, 10 March 2008 (EDT)
Cool!
That sounds like a cool function. I'll be interested to see how it works out! Ethan 12:39, 8 March 2008 (EST)
AT?
I saw on your firesteel review that you're heading out for the AT? That's really cool - I'm hoping to do it in a few years... Have a good time! Ethan 12:33, 8 March 2008 (EST)
Checking in
Hey Funditor - Sorry I haven't been around much lately. I've been pretty busy. Anyways, I should be helping out and writing quite a bit more soon. I'm getting a new computer! Ethan 22:42, 15 February 2008 (EST)
Links
There are a couple other boards from which I'd like to link to this site. I assume that's cool?... Deadeye 09:40, 12 February 2008 (EST)
Thanks
Monday 12:39AM EST- Thank you for sprucing up my fire article and adding commentary. I like all the touches. I'm not used to having my posts edited, but now I can see how it's cool that other members can add to them.
Hey
I found this site through your post on Bladeforums WSS (DeadeyeLefty). The info I put in looks much better now that the headings have been changed to look like the rest. I'll have to dig into the cheatsheet to see how to do a table of contents as well as adding images. Thanks for a great site! Deadeye 01:10, 5 February 2008 (EST)
New Article
Hey Funditor, I just wrote and article, Simple Fire Starting, and placed it with the other fire related articles in the middle of the main page. It took me like 2 hours ti figure out how to post it and I just hope I did everything right. Please let me know if I should do anything differently in the future. Thanks again for inviting me.-Omega Man
21:14
Actually, it said 21:14. Close enough, I assume. I like EST though... Nice! Ethan 22:06, 9 January 2008 (EST)
Righto
No, I was using capitals. I did try lower-case, but mostly capitals. Oh well... I'll work on it. Ethan 23:03, 9 January 2008 (CET)
Redirecting
There seems to be an issue with redirecting pages. Those already in existence (see: White-tail) work fine, but I can't get new ones to work. Is there a code issue, or is it me? Thanks, User:Ethan 21:03, 9 January 2008 (CET)
OK, I have permission from a guy on paleoplanet.net to use some great photos he took, of desert wildlife. However, I can't for the life of me get a tag accrediting them to him to come into the photo description. How does that work? Oh, and thanks for the additions to the fusing article. I'm learning stuff already!
Ethan 05:29, 9 January 2008 (CET)
Neat
OK. I like the new look of the front page. I've just taken a few photos, and I'll be uploading them. I'm going to work with a cooking section. Ethan 23:26, 8 January 2008 (CET)
I fixed it
I lowered my cookie protection, so these cookies are just restricted, not forbidden.
A few notes
First off, I fixed the cookie issue that I was talking about on slinging.org Second, I'm not to great with videos, but once I get back to my dsl connection I'll play around with them. Third, I don't really care what you import, because if I feel like writing something totally new, I will. There is a disclaimer on every edit page warning you that you will be edited, so what the heck? We should get as much material in as fast as possible. Ethan 04:11, 7 January 2008 (CET)
Nice!
Cool! I'll mess around with some videos soon, especially of slinging... Those will help that article a great deal! Ethan 19:57, 6 January 2008 (CET)
Whew
OK. I was hoping you would say something like that, and not drive me away for being underage (some people do that...). I thank you for the complement, by the way! Ethan 19:12, 6 January 2008 (CET)
Good
Nicely done. I understand completely. By the way, do you know how old I am? Ethan 19:06, 6 January 2008 (CET)
Ahem...
There is an admin request: http://slinging.org/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1199238532/15#15 What do you think? it's your call. Ethan 18:57, 6 January 2008 (CET)
I like it!
I don't think it is distracting at all anymore. In fact, I quite like it! I don't see any reason why we should get a new one... Maybe just modify the flame a bit (example: Add "Klippe - The Wilderness Wiki" to it somewhere.) Ethan 17:33, 6 January 2008 (CET)
Heh...
So I noticed. I was wondering why I couldn't find it again... OK, I'm back and forth, so whenever you change the logo is fine with me. I can't wait to see... Ethan 17:02, 6 January 2008 (CET)
Bye-bye main Page
Ok, I'll go fix it. Will you be working on the site right now, like taking it up and down to mess with code? Ethan 16:54, 6 January 2008 (CET)
Your table of Contents...
Just organized this page, like a good little SysOp (or doobie, as they call them...) Ethan 07:23, 6 January 2008 (CET)
Old Main page?
OK, I just pressed Random Article and got the original Main Page (not Klippe - Main Page) It is the Main Page, that still says "Edit Me!", or something equally as unnecessary. Should it be deleted? Ethan 07:14, 6 January 2008 (CET)
Thanks!
That's much easier on the eyes - Thanks!
Ethan 06:50, 6 January 2008 (CET)
Logo fix?
Hey Funditor - any chance of making the logo a little less visually riveting? As I write articles, and proof-read them, I've noticed it can be a bit of a visual distraction, especially from other images in the article. It isn't a major problem, but I just figured I'd let you know.
Ethan 05:29, 6 January 2008 (CET)
Note
OK, thanks Funditor! I'm trying to get a few stubs up for the start articles, to grab peoples interest. Hopefully, that article can branch out soon. I'm adding a few more pictures, too. Thanks for this project, it's really enjoyable! I'll be calling it quits for a while too; I've got to go eat dinner. I think I'll be back on to edit more later tonight, though.
Ethan 01:19, 6 January 2008 (CET)
Messaging fix
And, I edited it. Fixed! Ethan 00:48, 6 January 2008 (CET)
Messaging fix
OK, I found out how my message ended up on that other page. It's linked from the main page. I'll be editing it in just a minute. Anyways, I like the logo! It took a little while to load, but it certainly looks cool! Ethan 00:45, 6 January 2008 (CET)
Pics
Funditor - I found the image of the deer on wikipedia.org, under several related articles. It is from a U.S. Agricultural survey, and is under the public domain. The compass is my own work; it is originally from my blog. It is only temporary. I plan to do a few still-lifes of some equipment soon, and get more images up. A picture is worth a thousand words, you know?
Ethan 00:33, 6 January 2008 (CET)
Messages Working
Hey Funditor - Looks like it is working! I was notified as soon as I navigated to the site.
Ethan 22:59, 5 January 2008 (CET)
I like it
I'm assuming these'll be text title links, not thumbnail links...
